An Extraordinary Dream

The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said:
“We went on and came to a man lying on his back and there was another man standing over him with an iron hook. He went to one side of his face and gashed open the side of his mouth until it reached the back of his neck and then his nostril to the back of his neck and his eye to the back of his neck.
Then he moved to the other side and did the same thing as he had done to the first side. When he had finished that side, the first side had become whole again. Then he did the same thing all over again. I said, ‘Glory be to Allah! Who are these two?’ ….
(They said,) ‘As for the man you came to whose jaw was split to his neck, whose nostril to his neck and whose eye to his neck, he was a man who went from his house and told lies which spread everywhere.”
[Sahih Bukhari]
May Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) save us from inclusion among such liars. Although we may not be media people, anchors or news broadcasters who portray Allah-fearing people as terrorists and terrorists as well-wishers, or politicians that take countries to wars on lies; we should be very careful that we do not participate in the spreading of their lies either. May Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) save us from being counted among those who spread lies.

Belief in Allah(s.w.t)

Recently I started hearing this question a lot. The idea of believing in God without following His commands or the fara’ed (required acts) in the religion is becoming more common and appealing.
Some people would say: why are there required aspects in Islam to start with? Why can’t we just love Allah and get Paradise without requirements, just based on love and belief in the heart?
The main problem they seem to have is with the idea of having fara’ed (required aspects). They object to that or are inclined to feel rebellious against it.
This is interesting.
But let’s think about this together…
What happens when you want to create a Facebook account, for example?
You will have to fill an online form that has some “required fields”. The required fields are most commonly placed next to a red asterisk and must be filled out. What happens if you don’t fill in the required fields? Will you be able to move forward and create the account? No. You will continue to be referred back to the required fields.
So, the required fields are ‘required’ for you to move forward.
Did you revolt against these rules or think that Facebook is oppressive and controlling merely for placing some “requirements” on you to enter its world and use it services? Most probably not.
Most people just go ahead with filling the form because- if you think about it- everything else in this life also has requirements.
If you think, for example, about someone who wants to go on a diet and lose weight. This person will go to the doctor to help him lose weight and be fit and healthy. What will the doctor do? Most probably the doctor will give the patient a set of ‘requirements'; you have to eat healthy food, eat fruits and vegetables, avoid sugar, avoid sodas and fast food, start working out an hour everyday…..etc.
If you want to achieve a healthy and fit body, then you will follow the requirements, right?
It’s illogical then for you to tell the doctor: “why can’t I just lose weight and be fit automatically based on the desire in my heart, why do I have to follow certain rules and requirements, why are you oppressing me?”
This doesn’t make sense because achieving anything requires some effort. We go to the experts to get guidelines on what to do and what not to do to achieve great results.
Think about college students as well. For them to earn a prestigious degree, they have to take required courses and get certain grades. In any classroom, the student has to follow the professor’s requirements to pass the course. The Professor usually has a number of requirements for the students that they must abide by like; attendance, participation in class discussions, Midterm exam, final project…etc. Students have to follow the requirements in order to pass the course, move forward and progress in their academic life. Right?
Can you -as a student- go to the professor and say: “why can’t you just give me an ‘A'; why do I have to follow all these requirements, why are you oppressing me? Can’t I just be a good student without following all these rules?”
Well, how will the Professor be able to judge or test whether or not you’re a good student if you don’t act on what you’ve learned, prove yourself and showcase your knowledge?
It is not enough to say or claim that you understand or that you have knowledge, you have to show it and act on it in order to be graded and be taken seriously. If you want to be a Doctor for example, and you read many books on practicing medicine, but you haven’t actually been tested by any credible institute or have a degree, do you think people will allow you to operate on them? Most definitely not.
Following the requirements and being tested is a part of any committed, serious endeavour.
Now, think about Allah our Creator Glorified and Exalted. Is it really “oppressive and unnecessary” for Him to give us a set of requirements?
Consider the examples we mentioned above, and then think about this carefully.
First of all, requirements are part of nearly everything else we have in life. Even if you want to go buy some food and groceries, you are still ‘required’ to pay for that. We don’t usually say that stores are oppressive and controlling for setting prices on food. We just follow the rules. This is normal and this is part of our accepted day-to-day livelihood. This is what makes us civilised humans: that we learn and follow rules. We don’t simply act on our desires.
Second of all, achieving any goal requires a plan and a set of actions. If you want to buy a beautiful house in an Island for example to live in after you retire, then you will have to make a plan and put some effort. You need to assess the cost and the effort you need to put at work to earn enough money to buy your dream house. Right? That’s fair enough. Afterall, simply being granted the house without any effort from your side makes this whole experience meaningless. It is definitely not like earning it or working hard for your success. This is why many people criticize certain celebrities who are ‘famous for being famous’ because the haven’t really earned what they have through serious, substantial work.
Now, if you want to achieve eternal Paradise, doesn’t it make sense for this great goal to also have some requirements?
If you want to achieve the closeness and love of Allah Almighty, shouldn’t there by some guidelines for this relationship?
You’ll argue saying “well, why can’t I just love Him and He loves me?”
That’s great. Allah already loves us. He created the entire universe for us and made it submissive to us. We need almost everything in the universe, and it doesn’t need us, it will function perfectly without us. And Allah created eternal Paradise for us. But any loving relationship still has some requirements and guidelines.
Please think about any relationship that you have. Think of a husband and wife, for example. Are there absolutely no requirements whatsoever in this loving relationship just because they love one another? Of course there are. Actually this love is there because there has been some proofs for this love. If a wife disrespects her husband, neglects Him, doesn’t spend time with Him and spends most time with her friends, doesn’t fulfil his needs or respond to his calls, would this relationship work? Absolutely not.
There are requirements for the relationship. You can’t simply tell your wife “I’ll love you in my own way on my own terms, I don’t have to listen to you, or follow anything you say.” Is this love really? If you love, you try to learn about your beloved and try to do what he/she likes. Right?
Now, can you claim to love God without putting any effort to know what He asked for or do what He required?
Truth be told, that’s not an acceptable relationship to anybody. You won’t even accept someone doing that to you. You won’t accept someone not knowing about you, not listening to you, not engaging with you as you like, then claiming to love you. That’s not real, that’s not sincere.
And what we need to remember here is that Allah Almighty doesn’t really take anything for Himself. He is free of need. You might ask: “If He is free of need, then why is He asking us to do certain things?” Well because He wants YOU to benefit from doing these things, He cares about YOU and loves YOU and is asking you to do what will eventually benefit YOU not Him. Why is a mother asking her child not to come near the oven? Or asking him to eat his veggies? Because HE is the one who will benefit. She is making those requirements out of love for him and his well-being. She is not the one who will get burnt by the oven or become more healthy by eating the veggies. She doesn’t really benefit but it is pleasing to her to see him benefit.
And why does the Professor require you to do your assignments and your classwork? He won’t benefit, but you are the one who is going to learn and develop and be taken seriously in your academic career.
Why did the doctor prescribe certain activities and diet for the patient?  This won’t affect him, but the patient is the one who is going to reap the benefits of those requirements.
Essentially, everything that Allah requires us to do has benefit for us spiritually, physically, intellectually and socially. His requirements essentially are there for our own well being.
As the Creator of the heart, mind and soul, He is The Most Knowing of them and He instructs us to do what is essentially beneficial for the heart, mind and soul that He created.
“Does He who created not know, while He is the Subtle, the Acquainted?” ( Qur’an 67: 14)
And Allah doesn’t want to burden us, rather He wants to lighten our burdens.
“…Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship…” ( Qur’an 2: 185)
“Allah wants to make clear to you [the lawful from the unlawful] and guide you to the [good] practices of those before you and to accept your repentance. And Allah is Knowing and Wise.” ( Qur’an 4: 26)
“And Allah wants to lighten for you [your difficulties]; and mankind was created weak.” (Qur’an 4: 28)
So, to think about it thoroughly, the requirements are for our own well being; and just like you listen to a Doctor because He has some knowledge, it makes sense to listen to the Creator because He has all knowledge. Any loving relationship has some basic rules and requirements. Allah doesn’t really take anything for Himself. If you think about it fairly, the human being lives on this earth on average for 70- 80 years. If we worship God for 70-80 years, then fairly, we should get around 80 years worth of Paradise. Right? But is this the case? No. Allah is offering eternal Paradise in which one will get absolutely anything he/she wants and will never be asked to do anything or any work whatsoever anymore. This is too generous and much more rewarding for the few requirements that we were asked  for. Truth be told also, we do NOT spend our 70- 80 years in worship. We take time to sleep, eat, commute, engage with our friends and families, have fun and practice out hobbies….etc. If you actually count how much of the 24 hours Allah gav us daily we actually use to engage with Him, it will be a rather insignificant time.
The reality is, Allah is requiring too little and He is giving too much.
Is it really nice that even in the little that we are required to do, we argue and reject and object and ignore and follow our own desires? Scratch that, is it really loving to do so?
When did you tell a loved one that you want to love them on your own terms without listening to what they say or without owing them anything? Did this relationship really work?
” O mankind, what has deceived you concerning your Lord, the Generous,
Who created you, proportioned you, and balanced you?
In whatever form He willed has He assembled you. (Qur’an 82: 6-8)
This is just food for thought and to Allah belongs all Mercy and Wisdom…
May Allah make us among His grateful, humble, committed creations. May He facilitate for us deeply knowing Him, sincerely loving Him and actively following Him the way He asked us to follow Him for our own peace and our own well being in this life and the next. Ameen.

Children And Islam

If you have one last thing to tell your children before you die, what would it be?
Think about this honestly and carefully.
What -in your opinion- is the most important last message you want to remind your children of before you die…?
Some people might -at this moment- be concerned about inheritance issues, about their own health issues and pain, about work or people they’re leaving behind…etc.
There are many urgent issues on people’s minds. But how do we know what is THE most important question or message to remind our children of before we die?
Well, Allah has given us a very beautiful and important pointer in the Noble Qur’an.
He narrated to us what Prophet Jacob (peace be upon him) asked his own children right before he dies….
“Or were you witnesses when death approached Jacob, when he said to his sons, “What will you worship after me?” They said, “We will worship your God and the God of your fathers, Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac – one God. And we are Muslims [in submission] to Him.” ( Qur’an 2: 133)
“What will you worship after me?” This is the single most important question to ask your children. And this is not a matter that was brought up in Jacob’s life only at his death bed. Rather, the answer to this question is what he has been teaching them tirelessly all his life.
This is THE most important issue to work on and pass on to your children. Sadly, many people only focus on passing to their children wealth or assets, or to make sure they have enough degrees of material knowledge to be able to get decent jobs. But they don’t give that much attention to what will determine their children’s eternal abode….either eternal Jannah or eternal loss…
We take this question for granted or handle it lightly as if it doesn’t need work. The reality is, whatever other issue we may be worried about will end by the end of our lives, will end once people go to their graves; wealth, people, degrees, fame, assets, popularity…. None of that will be taken with you to your grave.
“Everyone upon the earth will perish, and there will remain the Face of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honor.” ( Qur’an 55: 26- 27)
Everything will perish. The Only Eternal is Allah, so have your kids been working for Him, have they been getting themselves ready for the moment they meet Him and get asked about their purpose in life and how they spent the time they had on this earth….?
The issue is, this is not a matter of spoon feeding your children information about their deen with no heart or soul put into this. It is not about throwing them into an Islamic school or sending them to a sheikh to tell them information about their religion.
This is more about the real nourishment of your children; the spiritual, intellectual, emotional and physical nourishment of your children based on this perfect and complete path of Islam.
It is about living and experiencing Islam fully with your children. This is a major and an immense human experience that shows them the purpose of life, its beginning, its destination and its meaning.
You are the one whom Allah hired to fulfill this mission with the children He gave you.
Having children is not a luxury or a routine Children are an ‘amana’ (a trust) that Allah has placed in your hands. They can testify for you or testify against you. You’ve either shown them the way, or you’ve driven them away from it. And this is something that we will be asked about on The Day of Judgement. That’s why you could sense Jacob’s concern about the seriousness of this issue and how he made sure he fulfills his trust with his children.
This is a reminder.
Allah has blessed you with people to share Islam with. The first and most essential dawah you’re going to give in your life is the dawah you give to your children.
They will know Allah first through you. They will see Islam in you. Sometimes we only focus on our livelihood and how to provide for our families, but we forget our major mission and ultimate duty towards them.
Notice what Allah says here in these verses
“ And remind, for indeed, the reminder benefits the believers.
And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.
I do not want from them any provision, nor do I want them to feed Me.
Indeed, it is Allah who is the [continual] Provider, the firm possessor of strength
.” ( Qur’an 51: 55- 58)
Notice here how He mentioned provision right after reminding us of the purpose of life: worshipping and knowing Him. If you think about it, seeking after provision is one of the main reasons why people get absorbed in life and forget about Allah and their purpose, while here in these verses Allah is telling us not to fear provision because He is the Ultimate Provider, and so people should focus on Him first and foremost!
We often ask ourselves how to spend more time with our children due to the busy work life.  But this primarily is a matter of understanding our purpose in life and resetting our priorities accordingly based on that.
Nourishing children spiritually and working on our own spiritual nourishment and our relationship with Allah is not a luxury or a secondary issue that we do on the side. This IS our ultimate mission in life.
If you think about this life, Allah created everything in it for us. He has facilitated life for us and submitted a lot of creations for our service. We need and we use everything around us. But actually, nothing in the creation really needs us or depends on us. The universe would do just fine without us. The sun, the moon, the seas, the oceans, the earth… everything will survive just fine – or even better- without us.

So what is our role, what is our main job on this earth and the purpose of our existence?
We need to constantly think about that and reflect on it with our kids. The purpose of life shouldn’t be an issue they hear for the first time in a philosophy class in college, and then find themselves doubting their religion. How come they haven’t been introduced to this through us earlier? Where have we been? Aren’t we worried about our children’s eternal destination? How come we focus most of our energy on the livelihood of their temporary life, and we don’t care that much about their eternal abode?
This is what Jacob (peace be upon him) realized. He was concerned about what really matters and what really lasts. He was concerned about his children’s eternal destination. He loved his children dearly and he wanted to be reunited with them. If their relationship was revolving around Al Baqi (The Eternal ) Creator, then He will surely reunite them again. But if their relationship was revolving around mortal life, then they’ll be lost once it vanishes because they haven’t linked their existence to the what’s Eternal!

These are just some points for us to reflect on. If we want to practically start incorporating that into our lives, then here are a few points to kick-start:

1- Seek Allah’ Help to guide you and open the best doors for you to live your life in the best manners possible and to guide your own kids on the same path. No one can progress on this path without seeking the Help of Allah. No wonder then that we say at least 17 times everyday during our five daily prayers, “ You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help.” in Surat Al Fatiha.

So ask Allah sincerely and persistently and earnestly for His help.

2- Always remember the purpose of existence and renew your intention and direction in life accordingly. Whenever you find yourself getting too busy, ask yourself whether all this time is being spent in the right direction and for the sake of Allah and for what really eternally matters and lasts. Intention matters as a reality check and a chance to help us constantly rearrange our priorities and set us back on the right track of our destination.

3- Engage your kids spiritually, intellectually, physically and socially with their deen. This path is a way of life, not a way of worship. There are plenty of ways to teach them that. Let us educate ourselves and seek learned persons and institutions for aid to help us and help our children and get creative and effective ideas. Don’t leave any of your kids’ questions unanswered. There are beautiful and logical answers to everything in this deen. Help your kids see that from an early age and live this experience with them. Learn together and grow together on this path.

4 – Truly focus more on being upright and righteous and make it the ultimate priority to teach that to your children. There is a very important and interesting reminder in Surat Al Kahf ( Qur’an chapter 18) on this point.

Allah told us the story of the two orphans and how Prophet Moses and his companion helped them.
“And as for the wall, it belonged to two orphan boys in the city, and there was beneath it a treasure for them, and their father had been righteous. So your Lord intended that they reach maturity and extract their treasure, as a mercy from your Lord. And I did it not of my own accord. That is the interpretation of that about which you could not have patience.” (Qur’an 18 : 82)

You will notice here how Allah helped the two boys because their father was righteous. Those were two little orphans in a very greedy town of cold hearted people. Had anyone knew in that town that the orphan boys had a treasure left for them by their father, they would have stolen the treasure in cold blood and left nothing for the boys. But Allah Almighty protected and guarded the boys and sent them the right helpers to help them at the right time, and this aid happened on account of the righteousness of their father.
His righteousness protected his children, even after his death.
Read that again…

His righteousness protected his children even after his death, because He placed them in the Hands of The Best Helper and Best Protector.

If we focus on Allah, then nothing will be lost. But if we lose Him, then we haven’t really gained anything that lasts.

May Allah protect us and our children in this life and the next, and may He reunite us in the best place near Him for eternity.

The Real King

Take a deep breath.
Clear your mind.
Empty your heart and mind of everything that is troubling you for a minute.
Done?
Now, read this hadith…
A Jewish Rabbi came to Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) and said, “O Muhammad! Allah will put the Heavens on one finger and the earth on one finger, and the trees and the rivers on one finger, and the rest of the creation on one finger, and then will say, pointing out with His Hand, ‘I am the King.’ “On that Allah’s Apostle smiled and said,” They have not appraised Allah with true appraisal, while the earth entirely will be [within] His grip.” (Qur’an 39.67) [Sahih Al Bukhari]
Let’s read this again slowly…
The entire Heavens and everything therein…on a finger of His…
The entire earth and everything therein… on a finger of His…
All the creation from the beginning of time until the end of time…on a finger of His…
This is Allah. The King!
“They have not appraised Allah with true appraisal, while the earth entirely will be [within] His grip on the Day of Resurrection, and the heavens will be folded in His right hand. Exalted is He and high above what they associate with Him.” (Qur’an 39.67)
Let this meaning sink in your heart.
Let it expand your heart and remind you of your Creator, The One who is Most Merciful to you, The One who is the closest to you…
Why are we remembering this now?
Because sometimes, we let the fear of this world absorb us.
We forget who we are dedicating our lives to; we forget who we are standing in prayer to, who we are bowing to, who we are prostrating to….
We have been honored with the opportunity of knowing, loving, worshipping and getting closer to The Ultimate King.
This is such a huge blessing. This is the blessing of all blessings.
Sometimes we take our faith for granted, or we say when we are faced with a difficulty, “well, we only have Allah now” with an attitude of despair and helplessness.
That’s not befitting.
Remember who Allah is.
“Indeed, Allah holds the heavens and the earth, lest they cease. And if they should cease, no one could hold them [in place] after Him. Indeed, He is Forbearing and Forgiving.” (Qur’an 35: 41)
When you say you have Allah, remember that you have The One who is Bigger than the entire existence and everything therein, The One who is Mightier and Stronger than the entire existence and everything therein, The One in whose Hands is the entire dominion. This is Allah, your God and my God. The One & Only!
“So do not weaken and do not grieve, and you will be superior if you are [true] believers.” (Qur’an 3: 139)
The Prophet (peace and blessings upon him) smiled when the man talked to him about Allah. He smiled because he (peace be upon him) is most knowing of His Beloved. He smiled because it is pleasing to hear people speaking about The One you love.
Yet, no matter what they say, they won’t be able to praise Him as He deserves to be praised.
“So exalted is He in whose hand is the realm of all things, and to Him you will be returned.” (Qur’an 36: 83)
Let us remember today to truly glorify Allah in our hearts. There is no one we fear but Him, there is no one like Him, there is no one before Him, there is no one beside Him and there is no one after Him. He is Allah, The One!
Let the meaning of tawheed enter your heart and mind because this brings light and this brings peace and strength and clarity.
Remember in sujood who you are prostrating to, and then ask Him of all you need. Indeed, He is The Nearest and Most Merciful King of all kings.

Surat Al Kahf

Surat Al Kahf has immense blessings.
Abu Darda’ reported Allah’s Apostle (may peace be upon him) as saying: If anyone learns by heart the first ten verses of the Surat Al-Kahf, he will be protected from the Dajjal. (Sahih muslim Book 004, Hadith 1766)
Abu Sa’id al-Khudri reports that the Prophet SAW said: “Whoever recites Surat Al-Kahf on Jumu’ah will have illumination from the light from one Jumu’ah to the next.” (an-Nasa’i, al-Baihaqi, and al-Hakim)
Surat Al-Kahf (The Cave) – الكهف سورة (Chapter 18, Juz 15-16)بِسۡمِ ٱللهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيم

English Translation – Sahih International
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.
[All] praise is [due] to Allah, who has sent down upon His Servant the Book and has not made therein any deviance. (1)
[He has made it] straight, to warn of severe punishment from Him and to give good tidings to the believers who do righteous deeds that they will have a good reward (2)
In which they will remain forever (3)
And to warn those who say, “Allah has taken a son.” (4)
They have no knowledge of it, nor had their fathers. Grave is the word that comes out of their mouths; they speak not except a lie. (5)
Then perhaps you would kill yourself through grief over them, [O Muhammad], if they do not believe in this message, [and] out of sorrow. (6)
Indeed, We have made that which is on the earth adornment for it that We may test them [as to] which of them is best in deed. (7)
And indeed, We will make that which is upon it [into] a barren ground. (8)
Or have you thought that the companions of the cave and the inscription were, among Our signs, a wonder? (9)
[Mention] when the youths retreated to the cave and said, “Our Lord, grant us from Yourself mercy and prepare for us from our affair right guidance.” (10)
So We cast [a cover of sleep] over their ears within the cave for a number of years. (11)
Then We awakened them that We might show which of the two factions was most precise in calculating what [extent] they had remained in time. (12)
It is We who relate to you, [O Muhammad], their story in truth. Indeed, they were youths who believed in their Lord, and We increased them in guidance. (13)
And We made firm their hearts when they stood up and said, “Our Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth. Never will we invoke besides Him any deity. We would have certainly spoken, then, an excessive transgression. (14)
These, our people, have taken besides Him deities. Why do they not bring for [worship of] them a clear authority? And who is more unjust than one who invents about Allah a lie?” (15)
[The youths said to one another], “And when you have withdrawn from them and that which they worship other than Allah, retreat to the cave. Your Lord will spread out for you of His mercy and will prepare for you from your affair facility.” (16)
And [had you been present], you would see the sun when it rose, inclining away from their cave on the right, and when it set, passing away from them on the left, while they were [laying] within an open space thereof. That was from the signs of Allah. He whom Allah guides is the [rightly] guided, but he whom He leaves astray – never will you find for him a protecting guide. (17)
And you would think them awake, while they were asleep. And We turned them to the right and to the left, while their dog stretched his forelegs at the entrance. If you had looked at them, you would have turned from them in flight and been filled by them with terror. (18)
And similarly, We awakened them that they might question one another. Said a speaker from among them, “How long have you remained [here]?” They said, “We have remained a day or part of a day.” They said, “Your Lord is most knowing of how long you remained. So send one of you with this silver coin of yours to the city and let him look to which is the best of food and bring you provision from it and let him be cautious. And let no one be aware of you. (19)
Indeed, if they come to know of you, they will stone you or return you to their religion. And never would you succeed, then – ever.” (20)
And similarly, We caused them to be found that they [who found them] would know that the promise of Allah is truth and that of the Hour there is no doubt. [That was] when they disputed among themselves about their affair and [then] said, “Construct over them a structure. Their Lord is most knowing about them.” Said those who prevailed in the matter, “We will surely take [for ourselves] over them a masjid.” (21)
They will say there were three, the fourth of them being their dog; and they will say there were five, the sixth of them being their dog – guessing at the unseen; and they will say there were seven, and the eighth of them was their dog. Say, [O Muhammad], “My Lord is most knowing of their number. None knows them except a few. So do not argue about them except with an obvious argument and do not inquire about them among [the speculators] from anyone.” (22)
And never say of anything, “Indeed, I will do that tomorrow,” (23)
Except [when adding], “If Allah wills.” And remember your Lord when you forget [it] and say, “Perhaps my Lord will guide me to what is nearer than this to right conduct.” (24)
And they remained in their cave for three hundred years and exceeded by nine. (25)
Say, “Allah is most knowing of how long they remained. He has [knowledge of] the unseen [aspects] of the heavens and the earth. How Seeing is He and how Hearing! They have not besides Him any protector, and He shares not His legislation with anyone.” (26)
And recite, [O Muhammad], what has been revealed to you of the Book of your Lord. There is no changer of His words, and never will you find in other than Him a refuge. (27)
And keep yourself patient [by being] with those who call upon their Lord in the morning and the evening, seeking His countenance. And let not your eyes pass beyond them, desiring adornments of the worldly life, and do not obey one whose heart We have made heedless of Our remembrance and who follows his desire and whose affair is ever [in] neglect. (28)
And say, “The truth is from your Lord, so whoever wills – let him believe; and whoever wills – let him disbelieve.” Indeed, We have prepared for the wrongdoers a fire whose walls will surround them. And if they call for relief, they will be relieved with water like murky oil, which scalds [their] faces. Wretched is the drink, and evil is the resting place. (29)
Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds – indeed, We will not allow to be lost the reward of any who did well in deeds. (30)
Those will have gardens of perpetual residence; beneath them rivers will flow. They will be adorned therein with bracelets of gold and will wear green garments of fine silk and brocade, reclining therein on adorned couches. Excellent is the reward, and good is the resting place. (31)
And present to them an example of two men: We granted to one of them two gardens of grapevines, and We bordered them with palm trees and placed between them [fields of] crops. (32)
Each of the two gardens produced its fruit and did not fall short thereof in anything. And We caused to gush forth within them a river. (33)
And he had fruit, so he said to his companion while he was conversing with him, “I am greater than you in wealth and mightier in [numbers of] men.” (34)
And he entered his garden while he was unjust to himself. He said, “I do not think that this will perish – ever. (35)
And I do not think the Hour will occur. And even if I should be brought back to my Lord, I will surely find better than this as a return.” (36)
His companion said to him while he was conversing with him, “Have you disbelieved in He who created you from dust and then from a sperm-drop and then proportioned you [as] a man? (37)
But as for me, He is Allah, my Lord, and I do not associate with my Lord anyone. (38)
And why did you, when you entered your garden, not say, ‘What Allah willed [has occurred]; there is no power except in Allah ‘? Although you see me less than you in wealth and children, (39)
It may be that my Lord will give me [something] better than your garden and will send upon it a calamity from the sky, and it will become a smooth, dusty ground, (40)
Or its water will become sunken [into the earth], so you would never be able to seek it.” (41)
And his fruits were encompassed [by ruin], so he began to turn his hands about [in dismay] over what he had spent on it, while it had collapsed upon its trellises, and said, “Oh, I wish I had not associated with my Lord anyone.” (42)
And there was for him no company to aid him other than Allah, nor could he defend himself. (43)
There the authority is [completely] for Allah, the Truth. He is best in reward and best in outcome.(44)
And present to them the example of the life of this world, [its being] like rain which We send down from the sky, and the vegetation of the earth mingles with it and [then] it becomes dry remnants, scattered by the winds. And Allah is ever, over all things, Perfect in Ability. (45)
Wealth and children are [but] adornment of the worldly life. But the enduring good deeds are better to your Lord for reward and better for [one’s] hope. (46)
And [warn of] the Day when We will remove the mountains and you will see the earth prominent, and We will gather them and not leave behind from them anyone. (47)
And they will be presented before your Lord in rows, [and He will say], “You have certainly come to Us just as We created you the first time. But you claimed that We would never make for you an appointment.” (48)
And the record [of deeds] will be placed [open], and you will see the criminals fearful of that within it, and they will say, “Oh, woe to us! What is this book that leaves nothing small or great except that it has enumerated it?” And they will find what they did present [before them]. And your Lord does injustice to no one. (49)
And [mention] when We said to the angels, “Prostrate to Adam,” and they prostrated, except for Iblees. He was of the jinn and departed from the command of his Lord. Then will you take him and his descendants as allies other than Me while they are enemies to you? Wretched it is for the wrongdoers as an exchange. (50)
I did not make them witness to the creation of the heavens and the earth or to the creation of themselves, and I would not have taken the misguiders as assistants. (51)
And [warn of] the Day when He will say, “Call ‘My partners’ whom you claimed,” and they will invoke them, but they will not respond to them. And We will put between them [a valley of] destruction. (52)
And the criminals will see the Fire and will be certain that they are to fall therein. And they will not find from it a way elsewhere. (53)
And We have certainly diversified in this Qur’an for the people from every [kind of] example; but man has ever been, most of anything, [prone to] dispute. (54)
And nothing has prevented the people from believing when guidance came to them and from asking forgiveness of their Lord except that there [must] befall them the [accustomed] precedent of the former peoples or that the punishment should come [directly] before them. (55)
And We send not the messengers except as bringers of good tidings and warners. And those who disbelieve dispute by [using] falsehood to [attempt to] invalidate thereby the truth and have taken My verses, and that of which they are warned, in ridicule. (56)
And who is more unjust than one who is reminded of the verses of his Lord but turns away from them and forgets what his hands have put forth? Indeed, We have placed over their hearts coverings, lest they understand it, and in their ears deafness. And if you invite them to guidance – they will never be guided, then – ever. (57)
And your Lord is the Forgiving, full of mercy. If He were to impose blame upon them for what they earned, He would have hastened for them the punishment. Rather, for them is an appointment from which they will never find an escape. (58)
And those cities – We destroyed them when they wronged, and We made for their destruction an appointed time. (59)
And [mention] when Moses said to his servant, “I will not cease [traveling] until I reach the junction of the two seas or continue for a long period.” (60)
But when they reached the junction between them, they forgot their fish, and it took its course into the sea, slipping away. (61)
So when they had passed beyond it, [Moses] said to his boy, “Bring us our morning meal. We have certainly suffered in this, our journey, [much] fatigue.” (62)
He said, “Did you see when we retired to the rock? Indeed, I forgot [there] the fish. And none made me forget it except Satan – that I should mention it. And it took its course into the sea amazingly”. (63)
[Moses] said, “That is what we were seeking.” So they returned, following their footprints. (64)
And they found a servant from among Our servants to whom we had given mercy from us and had taught him from Us a [certain] knowledge. (65)
Moses said to him, “May I follow you on [the condition] that you teach me from what you have been taught of sound judgement?” (66)
He said, “Indeed, with me you will never be able to have patience. (67)
And how can you have patience for what you do not encompass in knowledge?” (68)
[Moses] said, “You will find me, if Allah wills, patient, and I will not disobey you in [any] order.” (69)
He said, “Then if you follow me, do not ask me about anything until I make to you about it mention.” (70)
So they set out, until when they had embarked on the ship, al-Khidhr tore it open. [Moses] said, “Have you torn it open to drown its people? You have certainly done a grave thing.” (71)
[Al-Khidhr] said, “Did I not say that with me you would never be able to have patience?” (72)
[Moses] said, “Do not blame me for what I forgot and do not cover me in my matter with difficulty.” (73)
So they set out, until when they met a boy, al-Khidhr killed him. [Moses] said, “Have you killed a pure soul for other than [having killed] a soul? You have certainly done a deplorable thing.” (74)
[Al-Khidhr] said, “Did I not tell you that with me you would never be able to have patience?” (75)
[Moses] said, “If I should ask you about anything after this, then do not keep me as a companion. You have obtained from me an excuse.” (76)
So they set out, until when they came to the people of a town, they asked its people for food, but they refused to offer them hospitality. And they found therein a wall about to collapse, so al-Khidhr restored it. [Moses] said, “If you wished, you could have taken for it a payment.” (77)
[Al-Khidhr] said, “This is parting between me and you. I will inform you of the interpretation of that about which you could not have patience. (78)
As for the ship, it belonged to poor people working at sea. So I intended to cause defect in it as there was after them a king who seized every [good] ship by force. (79)
And as for the boy, his parents were believers, and we feared that he would overburden them by transgression and disbelief. (80)
So we intended that their Lord should substitute for them one better than him in purity and nearer to mercy. (81)
And as for the wall, it belonged to two orphan boys in the city, and there was beneath it a treasure for them, and their father had been righteous. So your Lord intended that they reach maturity and extract their treasure, as a mercy from your Lord. And I did it not of my own accord. That is the interpretation of that about which you could not have patience.” (82)
And they ask you, [O Muhammad], about Dhul-Qarnayn. Say, “I will recite to you about him a report.” (83)
Indeed We established him upon the earth, and We gave him to everything a way. (84)
So he followed a way (85)
Until, when he reached the setting of the sun, he found it [as if] setting in a spring of dark mud, and he found near it a people. Allah said, “O Dhul-Qarnayn, either you punish [them] or else adopt among them [a way of] goodness.” (86)
He said, “As for one who wrongs, we will punish him. Then he will be returned to his Lord, and He will punish him with a terrible punishment. (87)
But as for one who believes and does righteousness, he will have a reward of Paradise, and we will speak to him from our command with ease.” (88)
Then he followed a way (89)
Until, when he came to the rising of the sun, he found it rising on a people for whom We had not made against it any shield. (90)
Thus. And We had encompassed [all] that he had in knowledge. (91)
Then he followed a way (92)
Until, when he reached [a pass] between two mountains, he found beside them a people who could hardly understand [his] speech. (93)
They said, “O Dhul-Qarnayn, indeed Gog and Magog are [great] corrupters in the land. So may we assign for you an expenditure that you might make between us and them a barrier?” (94)
He said, “That in which my Lord has established me is better [than what you offer], but assist me with strength; I will make between you and them a dam. (95)
Bring me sheets of iron” – until, when he had leveled [them] between the two mountain walls, he said, “Blow [with bellows],” until when he had made it [like] fire, he said, “Bring me, that I may pour over it molten copper.” (96)
So Gog and Magog were unable to pass over it, nor were they able [to effect] in it any penetration. (97)
[Dhul-Qarnayn] said, “This is a mercy from my Lord; but when the promise of my Lord comes, He will make it level, and ever is the promise of my Lord true.” (98)
And We will leave them that day surging over each other, and [then] the Horn will be blown, and We will assemble them in [one] assembly. (99)
And We will present Hell that Day to the Disbelievers, on display – (100)
Those whose eyes had been within a cover [removed] from My remembrance, and they were not able to hear. (101)
Then do those who disbelieve think that they can take My servants instead of Me as allies? Indeed, We have prepared Hell for the disbelievers as a lodging. (102)
Say, [O Muhammad], “Shall we [believers] inform you of the greatest losers as to [their] deeds? (103)
[They are] those whose effort is lost in worldly life, while they think that they are doing well in work.” (104)
Those are the ones who disbelieve in the verses of their Lord and in [their] meeting Him, so their deeds have become worthless; and We will not assign to them on the Day of Resurrection any importance. (105)
That is their recompense – Hell – for what they denied and [because] they took My signs and My messengers in ridicule. (106)
Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds – they will have the Gardens of Paradise as a lodging, (107)
Wherein they abide eternally. They will not desire from it any transfer. (108)
Say, “If the sea were ink for [writing] the words of my Lord, the sea would be exhausted before the words of my Lord were exhausted, even if We brought the like of it as a supplement.” (109)
Say, “I am only a man like you, to whom has been revealed that your god is one God. So whoever would hope for the meeting with his Lord – let him do righteous work and not associate in the worship of his Lord anyone.” (110)
