Things which BREAK the fast
- Having sexual intercourse with his/her spouse : in this
situation qadha (making up missed fasts ) and Kaffarah
(to pay, in order to gain forgiveness for the sin committed
in the state of fasting.) become obligatory.
- Deliberate discharge of Maniyy (sperm) : This may occur
due to kissing, touching, hugging, watching the haram,
thinking about it, masturbating (which is forbidden even
when not fasting) or any other means. It requires qadha
and kaffarah.
- Intentionally vomiting : the Prophet (Saw) said: “He who
vomits unwillingly does not have to make up for it (his
fast), but he who vomits intentionally must make up for it”.
So the fast of the one who vomits unwillingly is valid
unless some of the vomit returns down the throat, in this
case the fast becomes invalid and he should make up for
it.-
- anything that enters through one’s mouth and is
swallowed : whether it is nutritious or not.
- Eating and/or drinking : if the Muslim eats and drinks
intentionally in Ramadan he has to do kaffarah and qadha.
But if he ate or drunk forgetting that he is in Ramadan,
then his fast is valid because Prophet Mohammad (salla
Allahu alaihi wa sallam): “Whoever forgets while he is
fasting and he eats or drinks, then let him complete his
fast. For verily, it was only Allah who fed him and gave him
drink” (Al-Bukhari) .but he should stop from eating and
drinking the moment he remembers he is fasting.
- menstrual or post-natal bleeding : even if the post natal
bleeding or menses blood comes seconds before the
sunset, the fast is invalid.

Things that DO NOT break the fast:
- al Hijamah (cupping ): Scholars have 2 views regarding
this matter. Imam Malik, As-Shafi’i and Abou Hanifah said
that Hijamah doesn’t break the fast because It is narrated
in the Sahih that Prophet Muhammad pbuh] used Hijamah
(wet cupping) while he was fasting. Imam Ahmad said that
Hijamah break the fast.
- backbiting : Backbiting and slandering does not break the
fast. However, it reduces the effect of the fast.
- swallowing saliva, flies (unwillingly) and dust
- eye drops, applying medicine to the wounds, needles as
long as it has not nutritional value, asthma inhaler, putting
oil on the head, etc…

hears the Adhan of fajr, his fast is valid if he stops
immediately from eating.
- using the siwak, tooth paste : It is permissible for the
fasting person to use the Miswak or tooth paste, but it’s
makrooh (undesirable) to use the siwak if it was green.
Swallowing little pieces of the miswak or its moisture
break the fast.
- Having a wet dream does not break the fast as it's not
deliberate. It is reported by A'isha and Umm Salama (Allah
be pleased with them) that the Prophet (Allah bless him &
give him peace) would wake up in fajr time in a state of
major ritual impurity, perform ghusl, and fast. [Bukhari and
Muslim]
-cooling one’s self with water and rinsing the mouth : a
fasting person can rinse his mouth and cool themselves by
rinsing their bodies with water or wetting their clothes.

but it should be spitted immediately and not be swallowed.
